Memory for Asymmetric Events

چکیده

The study of memory for event duration in pigeons has, for the most part, centered on an unusual behavioral phenomenon and an interesting theoretical explanation for it. A typical experiment on memory for event duration involves trials initiated by a sample stimulus that is either short or long in duration (e.g., 2 vs. 10 sec of houselight) and that is later followed by the simultaneous presentation of two choice stimuli (e.g., red and green). A response to one stimulus (e.g., green) is reinforced on trials initiated by the longer sample stimulus, and a response to the other (red) is reinforced on trials initiated by the shorter sample stimulus. The unusual finding is that the forgetting functions following the two samples are reliably asymmetric, in that pigeons tend to choose the alternative associated with the short sample following a lengthy retention interval, regardless of which sample was actually presented. As a result, performance following the long sample decreases rapidly to well below 50% correct as the retention interval increases, whereas performance following the short sample remains accurate at well above 50% correct (Fetterman, 1995; Spetch, 1987; Spetch & Wilkie, 1982, 1983). This increasing bias to choose the alternative associated with the short sample as the retention interval increases is called the choose-short effect.

Effects of the asymmetric behavior of the shape memory alloy on nonlinear dynamic responses of thick sandwich plates with embedded SMA wires

In the present article, the dynamic behavior of sandwich plates with embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires is evaluated for two cases wherein (i) the stress-strain curve of the superelastic behavior of the SMA wires is symmetric and (ii) the mentioned curve is non-symmetric. A modified version of Brinson’s constitutive model is proposed and used. The high non-linearity in the behavior stems f...

The Asymmetric Impact of Weighting Economic and Political Events on the Fluctuations of Banking Group Index (Case of Tehran Stock Exchange)

Stock Exchange Investors have paid more attention to the banking group in recent years so that in many cases, the direction of the banking index has changed the general direction of the market. Therefore, exploring the banking index fluctuation is important from the point of view of investors as well as the direction of the market. The purpose is to examine the effectiveness and direction of ne...

Modeling Stock Market Volatility Using Univariate GARCH Models: Evidence from Bangladesh

This paper investigates the nature of volatility characteristics of stock returns in the Bangladesh stock markets employing daily all share price index return data of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) from 02 January 1993 to 27 January 2013 and 01 January 2004 to 20 August 2015 respectively.  Furthermore, the study explores the adequate volatility model for the stoc...

Optimized Fuzzy Controller Design in Unbalanced Voltage Drop Mode for Dynamic Voltage Restorer

The loss of balanced voltages involves a voltage drop due to symmetric three-phase errors, or the initiation of high-power three-phase loads or symmetric three-phase switches. While these events in an unbalanced way lead to asymmetric voltage drops. Voltage drops can cause asymmetric load on the power grid, the occurrence of volatility, and even network power outage. One of the most common ways...

ارزیابی اثرات استرس حاد و کورتیکوسترون بر فرآیند یادگیری و حافظه هیجانی ‌در موش صحرایی

Background: Previous studies suggested that stressful events that release Glucocorticoid from adrenal cortex and also injection of agonists of glucocorticoids receptors probably affect emotional learning and memory process and modulate them. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of acute stress and systemic injection of Corticosterone (as agonist of glucocorticoid receptors) on acq...

A CMOS Spiking Neural Network Circuit with Symmetric/Asymmetric STDP Function

SUMMARY In this paper, we propose an analog CMOS circuit which achieves spiking neural networks with spike-timing dependent synaptic plasticity (STDP). In particular, we propose a STDP circuit with symmetric function for the first time, and also we demonstrate associative memory operation in a Hopfield-type feedback network with STDP learning. In our spiking neuron model, analog information exp...
